World, local, group, and private chat

3DXChat is a chat world before it is anything else, and the official rules are written on that assumption: they govern behaviour in all game chats and channels. The official update history adds one thing this article has to be honest about, which is that the chat window was replaced wholesale in version 3.1 on 6 December 2024, and the detailed notes for that release were published only on the project's Discord server.

The four channels

This section is paraphrased from the community Basic Game Manual, an unofficial mirror of a guide written for version 2.5 beta build 375 in April 2018. Because the chat window was rebuilt in version 3.1, it describes the older window rather than the one in the current client, and nothing in it has been reverified in the game.

The manual names four kinds of conversation:

World chat, the global channel, which is always on display.
Local chat, which appears only while you are in a shared user world or in one of the general locations.
Group chat, whose tab appears once somebody has invited you into a group and you have accepted; any member can then invite more people.
Private conversations, which the manual describes as small flags along one edge of the chat window, each carrying the other person's name.

Switching between them is described as clicking the channel in the title bar of the chat window, or clicking the flag of a private conversation. A private conversation is opened by clicking a person and choosing to send them a message from the menu that appears.

The manual records a handful of conveniences alongside that: the Enter key opens the chat window; the chat button changes colour and plays a sound when something new arrives; a settings control offers text size, window opacity, the side the private flags sit on, and visual and audible notifications set separately for each channel; messages that arrived while you were away are shown at login; and a line that starts with a slash and the word me is presented as an action rather than as speech. A second community guide agrees that Enter opens chat and places the chat button in the cluster at the bottom right.

What the rules require

The official game rules refer throughout to chats and channels in the plural, and treat profiles as a further place where messages appear. The rules that decide most day-to-day cases are these:

Insults, personal attacks, abuse and harassment are not tolerated at any level.
Derogatory comments about race, nationality, religion or culture are prohibited, as is anything referring to minors sexually.
Spam, nonsense messages and excessive capitals are prohibited in the chats.
Begging and soliciting are prohibited, including asking other players to transfer real money or game gold.
Publishing somebody else's personal details without their agreement is prohibited.
Advertising is prohibited in chats and profiles, with an exception for recruiting within 3DXChat itself.
Discussing moderation decisions in the chats is prohibited; appeals go to technical support instead.

The rules apply whatever language you write in, and repeated breaches often end in permanent suspension.
